Unbox and Teardown of Ravpower 65w GaN PD fast charger

As one of the most popular brands of charger, Ravpower is regarded as the “First crab eater” of GaN charger.They have released 2 GaN fast chargers, which are Ravpower 45w, 30w and 61W GaN fast charger and really got big success. During the early 2020, they released a new 65w 1C1A GaN fast RP-CPCN002 charger, here let’s have a teardown about this new item. This product not only continues the characteristics of small size and foldable pins, but also adds a USB-A interface, and supports dual-port simultaneous fast charging output. Let’s have a look of the details now.

The RAVPOWER’s 65w GaN charger continues square shape with round corners, with a micro-convex design on the backside, Foldable pins make it small size and easy to carry.

The front side of the charger is glossy painted with RAVPOER logo.

The other side is gravure printed with number of “65”, means max output is 65w fast charge.

The input end is equipped with foldable international pins, and the ladjacent side is marked with the product parameter information.

When testing it with the ChargerLAB POWER-Z, it shows the USB-A port support Apple 2.4A, Samsung 5V / 2A, DCP protocol, QC2.0 / 3.0, AFC, FCP fast charging protocols.

The USB-C port support the folowing fast charging protocols: Apple 2.4A、Samsung 5V/2A、DCP,QC2.0/3.0、AFC、FCP and SCP.

In addition, its PDO message shows that the USB-C interface also supports the USB PD3.0 fast charging standard, with 5V3A, 9V3A, 12V3A, 15V3A, 20V3.25A fixed voltage gear.

2. Disassembly of RAVPOWER 65W 1A1C GaN charger

The PCB board is surrounded by a ring of metal heat sinks and is completely wrapped with insulating tape. The top is coated with silicone to help conduct heat. Two magnetic ring inductors near the interface are used for two output voltage reduction.

The pins are packaged in a common plastic board design, and the red and black wires are welded to the metal dome.

There is a black insulating plastic board between the bottom metal heat sink and the PCB board.

Remove the heat sink and the plastic board. The back of the PCB board is coated with thermal conductive adhesive to assist heat dissipation. The primary and secondary are hollowed out and equipped with plastic insulation boards. Let’s take a look at the chip information of this charger first.

The primary side GaN power chip uses nano-micron NV6115, which is the core component of the charger. It is understood that NV6115 has built-in driver and complex logic control circuit, 170mΩ conductance, withstand voltage of 650V, supports 2MHz switching frequency, and uses 5 * 6mm QFN package to save area.

The main control chip is ON Semiconductor NCP1342, which is a high-frequency primary PWM controller with built-in active X2 capacitor discharge and multiple perfect protection functions.

There are three chips on the back of the small PCB board at the output end, and the secondary output line of the transformer in the upper right corner is wound with multiple enameled wires to reduce the skin effect and improve efficiency.

The silk screen IBHJK secondary synchronous rectification controller, the actual model is MP6908A, comes from MPS core source semiconductor, the highest working frequency is 600KHz.

3.Sum up of RAVPOWER 65w GaN charger:

The charger of RAVPOWER adopts a square body with rounded corners and is equipped with foldable pins, which makes it very space-saving and easy to carry. Both ports support QC2.0 / 3.0, AFC, FCP multiple fast charging protocols, C port also has 5/9/12 / 15V3A and 20V / 3.25A five sets of fixed voltage gear, compatible with multiple gears complete. The maximum output of the dual-port is 18W and 65W respectively. During the dual-port output, the A port remains unchanged and the C port is reduced to 45W, which is suitable for charging two devices at the same time.
The disassembly of the charging head network found that the core power device used in this charger is the nano-micro NV6115 chip, and uses ON Semiconductor high-frequency controller. The secondary is composed of the core source MP6908A with Bandai MOS, and the DC-DC part uses intelligent Incorporating SW3515S and SW3516 controllers, two independent outputs, supporting intelligent power distribution and high integration. In addition, Aihua and Yongming electrolytic capacitors are used, and the overall materials are solid.
Both the input and output terminals of the charger are equipped with a small PCB board, making full use of the internal space to reduce the size of the product. The transformer and capacitor are glued and fixed. The inductor is wrapped with insulating tape. The insulating plate is isolated between the primary and secondary. The output uses solid capacitor filtering. The internal design layout is reasonable, the components are welded neatly and compactly, and the overall workmanship is the mainstream level in the industry.
